Many of us have spent a lot of time and effort trying to “get out of our own way” when playing music. And yet, when we sit down at the instrument or step onstage, we often find ourselves met by tension, self-judgment, physical tightness, or an inner voice that makes flow feel elusive.
This workshop will explore what gets in the way of flow—and, more importantly, how we can gently make room for it again.
Together, we’ll look at:
which types of musical situations bring up difficulties and explore solutions
tools that support presence, ease, and trust - at (and away from) the instrument
exercises to free up our natural and intuitive musical skills
the art of listening and the practice of patience in developing our ideas
letting go of forcing and overthinking/allowing the ‘story’ to unfold
This workshop draws from my own experience with ‘flow-block', and the increasing freedom I’ve found with practices like breath awareness, using my voice, movement, listening, and reflection. I have found that it’s not about forcing or fixing — but about creating the conditions where natural expression can emerge.
The gathering is open to musicians of any instrument and musical background. If you’ve ever felt blocked, tense, discouraged, or disconnected from the joy that brought you to music in the first place, you’re very welcome here.
