Many of us have spent a lot of time and effort trying to “get out of our own way” — especially when improvising. And yet, when we sit down at the instrument or step onstage, we often find ourselves met by tension, self-judgment, physical tightness, or an inner voice that makes flow feel elusive.
This workshop will explore what actually gets in the way of flow—and, more importantly, how we can gently make room for it again.
We’ll look at:
how the body and nervous system affect our playing
why self-criticism shows up and what we can do when it does
practical ways to work with these patterns rather than fight them
tools that support presence, ease, and trust—both at and away from the instrument
This workshop draws from my own experience with ‘flow-block', and the increasing freedom I’ve found with practices like breath awareness, using my voice, movement, listening, and reflection. I have found that it’s not about forcing or fixing — but about creating the conditions where natural expression can emerge.
